How To Make A Rubber Stamp

This article will teach you how to make a rubber stamp. Rubber stamps can be used for scrapbooks, paper crafts and so much more. Although there are thousands of rubber stamps you can purchase, some crafters enjoy making their own. It's easier than you think to make your own rubber stamp. You will need tracing paper, a pencil, an Exacto knife or other type of carving blade, and an eraser. You can use any kind of flat rectangular eraser you wish. After you've gathered your supplies, you are ready to create your pattern.

Your pattern can be anything you want. If you are a beginner you may want to start with something simple like a letter. When your pattern is perfect, make a photocopy of it. Then, trace it onto the tracing paper. Color the pattern in very dark so that there is a thick layer of pencil. Turn the pattern face down and press it onto your eraser. Take a rounded stick or other tool and rub over the paper so that the penciled pattern is transferred to the eraser. If you like you can darken the pattern outlines by drawing guidelines directly on the eraser after transferring.

Next, use your cutting tool to carve out the areas that are not colored in. When cutting, cut away from the pattern rather than towards it. Once the pattern has been carved, try out your stamp. You may find that more cutting is in order to make the pattern perfect. Once your stamp is perfect, you can leave it as it is or make a wooden mounting block on which to place it. If you want to do this, find a block of wood that is a little bigger than your stamp. Use the stamp to imprint the top of the wood with the pattern. You may want to add a coat of clear varnish to the block also.

Once the ink and varnish is dry, apply a coat of super glue, wood glue or rubber cement to underside of the wood block. The only thing left to do is attach the rubber stamp. Let the glue dry for several hours before using your stamp. Now that you know how to make a rubber stamp, why not try it out for yourself? Just make sure to use caution with your cutting tool as these blades are very sharp.
