Make Your Own Rubber Stamps

Did you know that you can make your own rubber stamps? It's true -- making rubber stamps is easy and fun. If you are especially crafty and enjoy creating artistic projects from start to finish you will love making stamps. The first step is to figure out the method you will use to make your stamp and gather your supplies. Most amateur stamp makers use rectangular rubber erasers as their stamp material. Vinyl erasers can also be used for stamp making. Pink Pearl erasers are also a popular choice that will work well.

Other supplies you will need include a cutting tool with which you can carve fine details. An Exacto knife is the perfect type of cutter for this purpose. You may also want to use a needle for poking out small pieces and detailing tiny areas. A pattern is also important, perhaps the most important part of making a stamp. Your pattern can be everything from an alphabet letter to the Mona Lisa. Shrink your pattern down to size using a photocopier. There are two easy ways to transfer the image to the eraser.

Place it face down on the eraser and wet a cotton ball with acetone. Rub the acetone over the paper to transfer the image. An alternative is to cover the paper with a piece of cloth and pass over it with an iron a few times. You can also pencil in your pattern on tracing paper and burnish it onto the eraser. Once your pattern has been transferred, it is time to start the cutting. Cut away from the pattern and use caution because Exacto knives are extremely sharp. Once your pattern has been cut test your stamp and see how it looks. Now is the time to make final adjustments to the pattern.

You can leave your homemade stamp unmounted or glue it onto a wooden block that is the same shape as the stamp but slightly bigger. Now you know how to make your own rubber stamps. This can definitely save you money when it comes to expensive pre-made rubber stamps and works just as well if you are good at carving. The only other thing you will need is ink for your stamp and you're all set. While stamping is a popular hobby, stamp carving is also fast becoming a hobby that is catching on with innovative artists and crafters also.
